In the past Christmas bread, named poprtnik or župnik, sipling, božičnik, mižnjak, namižnjak, pomižnjak, stolnik and more, was important part of the family traditions that were going on around Christmas time all over Slovenia.
Today baking special Christmas bread is mostly present in the south part of Slovenija, like Notranjska or Dolenjska region, but people still bake it also in Štajerska region and Soča valley.
Some call it Amber Wine, some the White Macerated Wine but let's face it, Orange Wine has the best sound.
But be aware, this wine is not made of oranges, but of white grapes. White grapes that were processed in a style of red grapes for red wine. That is the reason that the most explanatory name, White Macerated Wine, is more preferred by the professionals.
They make orange wine from white grapes that they don't press them instantly, but leave them for some time, anything from a few hours, few days or much longer. Because of the contact with a skin of the grape the colour of liquid (soon-to-be-wine) gets darker, more orange.
Without a shadow of a doubt this delicious and quite special wine deserves attention in a form of it's own festival. The Orange Wine Festival is happening from 14:00 to 21:00 on 24 April 2018 in Izola, costal town in Slovenia.
Expect a lot of nice wine, many from Slovenia, but also from Italy, Georgia, Austria, Croatia and others. Of course it depends a bit of the Covid-19 situation. There will be wine producers ready to explain you the story of their wine. While tasting it. Festival has some guided wine tastings - but be sure to apply on it beforehand.
There is a hot meal included in the ticket, keep in mind not to be really late, and some food tastings of small, quality producers.
Very serious beer. At least so are the guys from Brewery Tektonik claiming. And when we visited them the other day we got sure about how serious they really are. They are.
Among brandy lovers slivovitz enjoys its special admiration. It is one of the most appreciated at least in this parts of the World. And the best one to find in Slovenia is the Brkinski slivovec or Brkini slivovitz.
It has the mark of geographical origin and for this it has to be prepared in the traditional way. The secret lies in a special Brkini cauldron distillation, which has to be done only once.
The capital beer, as they like to call themselves, shares it's name and a symbol with a city Ljubljana. Loo-blah-nah is a phonetic transcription of Ljubljana in a slang of Ljubljana residents, for English speakers. And of course, dragon is the symbol.
I visited them on the outskirts of Ljubljana, in Črnuče area, while main brewer Domen was making magic.
If you ever had a glass of wine you should be able to differ Cviček from any other wine. Simply by its colour. It is not white, nor red, not even orange or rosé. It is Cviček.
There are many mean stories about this bright red wine from Dolenjska region (Lower Carniola region) and sometimes they might be close to the truth. But, to show you otherwise, I am presenting Cviček od fare, wine created by House of Wines Frelih (Hisa vina Frelih) that received Award Commended in London. This is the first time Cviček got any sort of recognition outside Slovenia.
Making selfies in front of touristic sights is one thing, learning how to make one Slovenian dish is taking your touristic experience on anther level.
Sometimes they have cooking workshops on the events, like it was the one we joined, at Metlika on it's biggest festival, Vinska Vigred.
Social Ljubljana Tour, named romantically - as a lot of things in sLOVEnia- Ljubljana with love, invites you to pay a visit to independent social companies that are part of a local ‘Think Social. Buy Local.’ movement.
While getting to know many stories of today's life in Slovenia and its capital you walk through the beautiful medieval part of Ljubljana and get to eat some food. Food with background, of course.
While visiting Slovenia, a visit to the wine cellar is a must. Choices are endless and the chosen one can be well planed in advanced or simply the first one that you see. Both is possible.
Unless you are not from Earth, you have probably realized that craft beer revolution has happened. Almost everywhere. Luckily Slovenia was not an exception.
Our pioneer is Human Fish Brewery, which, even after so many new beers popping out literally every day, still has the best name. In my opinion of course.
Cake Ljubljana is not an old thing but designed thoughtfully a few years ago. The idea was to make a cake that will, like Ljubljana as the capital city does, present all of Slovenia. The cake is delicious combination of all Slovenian culinary regions.
Lately there is a lot of talking about food self-sufficiency, and there is something interesting you should know about Slovenia and self-sufficiency... We don't produce even a gram of sugar but we are completely self-sufficient in wine production.
In an average season we produce slightly more than 100% of our consumption. It breaks down into 70% white wine, 27% red wine and the remaining 3% were rosé and sparkling wines.
After writing a blog in Slovenian language for 10 years I have finally come to my sense and started writing one in English as well.
