It is strictly personal, but Škocjan Education Trail is one of the most spectacular one in the country. And even though you don't need to be very fit to manage this trail, you will be highly rewarded. I can't emphasize this enough, but for everyone on the lazy side, I assure you, it is not a hard walk. Sunny day attracts young crowd to gather and sit on the grass of the Star Park (park Zvezda) which is part of a Congress Square (Kongresni trg). They chill, talk, read... on the grounds that was reconstructed in 1821 for the Congress of the Holy Alliance and then again by Jože Plečnik, just before the second world war.
If you love old stones, then visiting Roman Necropolis at Šempeter near Celje, is a must.
This truly remarkable remains were protected by pure coincidence. River Savinja has once in the past flooded the Roman cemetery, putting down marvelously carved tombstones and burying them in the mud, thus protecting them. Kokoš - name of a hill - might remind you of a coconut but it has nothing to do with it. Kokoš is a hen. Or, in this case, a hill that offers an easy and pleasant walk. When I was preparing photographs for the Vintgar Gorge I have realized I have none landscape oriented. Gorge, as you probably all know, is incredibly narrow valley that was carved through millenniums by the stream, Radovna in this case.
Cake Ljubljana is not an old thing but designed thoughtfully a few years ago. The idea was to make a cake that will, like Ljubljana as the capital city does, present all of Slovenia. The cake is delicious combination of all Slovenian culinary regions.
Sometimes names are quite simple and this is the case with Slovenian biggest castle. Its name is simply Castle. So castle Castle lies in a village named, and I am not kidding, Castle. That means that in a Castle there is a castle Castle.
Cobblers’ Bridge, known also as a Shoemaker Bridge got its name from the many past shoemakers’ workshops on the bridge. Back at those days it looked similar than today’s famous Ponte Vecchio, Old Bridge in Florence, Italy. Spring is back and eighties are also back. Well, if we want to be honest, they have been for a while. But when was the last time when you've played mini golf?
You can play it while visiting Ljubljana, mingling among mainly locals. Mini golf is situated almost at the centre of Ljubljana, at the edge of a Tivoli park, near the sport halls and National Museum of Contemporary History. Tivoli is Ljubljana's largest park, covering an area approximately 5 km2 and stretching right into the city centre. It is very popular among its residents and, similar to Central park in New York, offers space for recreation like jogging or strolling, offers shade in summer heat, has sports centre, 2 national museums National Museum of Contemporary History and International Centre of Graphic Arts, a greenhouse that can be visited and a few bars to refresh yourself.
Bled is one of top three visited places in Slovenia, but even if afraid of the crowds, worth visiting as the area is vast and you can adjust your visit.
Whether for summer swim in a refreshing lake or ice skating on it's frozen surface. Maybe for famous Bled's Cremeschnitte cake or to enjoy a stunning view from Bled's castle atop of the cliff like mountain. Lately there is a lot of talking about food self-sufficiency, and there is something interesting you should know about Slovenia and self-sufficiency... We don't produce even a gram of sugar but we are completely self-sufficient in wine production.
In an average season we produce slightly more than 100% of our consumption. It breaks down into 70% white wine, 27% red wine and the remaining 3% were rosé and sparkling wines. Prešern Square is among locals considered as the ultimate central square. Here you meet for coffee, for night party or just for a city stroll. If you are meeting a guide, you’ll most possibly meet him or her here.
Let's begin with something less known. Metlika. Little town in the southeast part of Slovenia, right at the border with Croatia. Metlika is not a famous tourist destination but has a genuine fell. The majority of people visit Metlika in spring for the biggest event, called Vinska Vigred (translation: Wine Spring) and in the summer, when people enjoy beautiful landscape and, most famous, the warmest river in Slovenia, River Kolpa.
Dragon Bridge is one of the main tourist attractions in Ljubljana. Everybody wants to see the famous Ljubljana dragon and have a picture with it so don’t be surprised to see tourist climbing up the Dragon Bridge.
Ljubljana is believed to be the city of dragons, after all, there is a dragon in City of Ljubljana’s coat of arms on the top of the castle. We believe it symbolizes strength, courage and might, even though the Ljubljana dragon had to be killed, according to the legend, by Greek hero Jason, so the people of Ljubljana could live freely. This double standard is rather confusing, but so is the legend. There is also a Christian legend, that St. George was actually the one killing the dragon.
