Orange Wine Festival

Some call it Amber Wine, some the White Macerated Wine but let's face it, Orange Wine has the best sound.

But be aware, this wine is not made of oranges, but of white grapes. White grapes that were processed in a style of red grapes for red wine. That is the reason that the most explanatory name, White Macerated Wine, is more preferred by the professionals.

They make orange wine from white grapes that they don't press them instantly, but leave them for some time, anything from a few hours, few days or much longer. Because of the contact with a skin of the grape the colour of liquid (soon-to-be-wine) gets darker, more orange.

Without a shadow of a doubt this delicious and quite special wine deserves attention in a form of it's own festival. The Orange Wine Festival is happening from 14:00 to 21:00 on 24 April 2018 in Izola, costal town in Slovenia.

Expect a lot of nice wine, many from Slovenia, but also from Italy, Georgia, Austria, Croatia and others. Of course it depends a bit of the Covid-19 situation. There will be wine producers ready to explain you the story of their wine. While tasting it. Festival has some guided wine tastings - but be sure to apply on it beforehand.

There is a hot meal included in the ticket, keep in mind not to be really late, and some food tastings of small, quality producers.

We had a wonderful sunset on a warm autumn day on the top of the highest Slovenian tower named Vinarium Lendava. A clear day, such as it was when we were there, enables you to see into 4 countries, of course Slovenia than Hungary, Croatia and even Austria.

Cviček - the most different of them all...

If you ever had a glass of wine you should be able to differ Cviček from any other wine. Simply by its colour. It is not white, nor red, not even orange or rosé. It is Cviček.

There are many mean stories about this bright red wine from Dolenjska region (Lower Carniola region) and sometimes they might be close to the truth. But, to show you otherwise, I am presenting Cviček od fare, wine created by House of Wines Frelih (Hisa vina Frelih) that received Award Commended in London. This is the first time Cviček got any sort of recognition outside Slovenia.

Slovenia is self-sufficient

Lately there is a lot of talking about food self-sufficiency, and there is something interesting you should know about Slovenia and self-sufficiency... We don't produce even a gram of sugar but we are completely self-sufficient in wine production.

In an average season we produce slightly more than 100% of our consumption. It breaks down into 70% white wine, 27% red wine and the remaining 3% were rosé and sparkling wines.

    Tjaša

After writing a blog in Slovenian language for 10 years I have finally come to my sense and started writing one in English as well.

I'll share with you beautiful places worth visiting in Slovenia and around it. I'll also talk about general things tourist should know and of course I'll write about food, drinks and accommodation, essentials for any visitor.

I am writing about my personal recommendations that are not influenced by any sponsors. But please, don't expect new post every day. ;)
